AI-Generated Phishing
AI helps scammers create polished, personalized fraudulent messages.
What it is
AI-generated phishing uses text-generation tools to produce or refine deceptive messages. AI can improve grammar, translation, personalization, and the speed of a conversation, but the core attack remains a fraudulent request. A recipient usually cannot reliably determine whether AI wrote it, and that distinction is less important than where the message sends them and what it asks them to do.
How it works
The attacker combines public or leaked information with generated messages tailored to a role, employer, or interest. Replies can be adapted quickly so the interaction feels attentive and knowledgeable. The final step still seeks a credential, harmful download, permission grant, or payment; polished writing does not change the destination's ownership.
How people get tricked
Older advice focused heavily on bad spelling and generic greetings. A flawless message that references a real conference or project can bypass those expectations. Even ordinary human-written phishing can be polished, so grammatical quality was never a reliable identity check.
Example scenario
An email accurately references your public conference talk and offers related slides. Its 'shared document' asks you to sign in on a site that does not belong to the document provider.
Warning signs
- A personalized message unexpectedly requires credentials, money, or software installation.
- The destination or requested permissions do not fit the stated purpose.
- Independent contact with the supposed sender does not confirm the request.
How to protect yourself
- ✓ Judge the request, domain, and authorization—not whether the prose sounds artificial.
- ✓ Open important services directly and verify unexpected tasks with the real sender.
- ✓ Use phishing-resistant sign-in methods where supported.
- ✓ Limit unnecessary public details without assuming that secrecy alone prevents targeting.
If it happens to you
Report the message and act on the actual exposure: revoke sessions after login theft, remove unwanted app grants, or contact your payment provider after a transfer. You do not need proof of AI involvement to report a fraudulent request or protect an affected account.
Know this now
Excellent writing is not authentication. AI makes personalization easier, but the safest checks remain independent identity and destination verification.
