Deepfakes

AI-made video, audio, or images that imitate a real person.

What it is

Deepfakes are synthetic media generated by AI that convincingly copy someone's face or voice — used to impersonate family, executives, or public figures.

How it works

A few seconds of public video or audio is enough to train a model. The result is used in a video call, a voice note, or a fake endorsement clip.

How people get tricked

We instinctively trust our eyes and ears. Seeing a familiar face say something removes the urge to verify it.

How to protect yourself

  • Verify unusual requests on a second channel you already trust.
  • Agree on a family or team safe word for emergencies.
  • Look for odd blinking, lip sync drift, or flat intonation.
  • Never approve money or data transfers from a video or voice call alone.

Know this now

Seeing is no longer believing — verification beats recognition.
