Fake Online Shops
Invented stores take payments without delivering the promised goods.
What it is
Fake online shops collect payment for goods they never intend to deliver, or deliver worthless substitutes. Some also harvest account and card information. A professional storefront is inexpensive to copy, so attractive product photos, apparent customer reviews, and HTTPS do not establish that a seller actually has stock or will honor refunds.
How it works
Scammers advertise heavily through social media or search, using unusually low prices and short-lived promotions. They may copy a real retailer's product descriptions and policies. After payment, they provide fake tracking, delay responses, or disappear; another version of the site can then reopen under a different name.
How people get tricked
A countdown creates fear of missing out, while reviews displayed on the seller's own site supply manufactured social proof. A new store is not automatically fraudulent, but missing independent evidence combined with irreversible payment demands is a strong reason to stop.
Example scenario
A newly advertised shop offers a popular console far below normal prices but only accepts bank transfers. Its address and return policy are copied from an unrelated business, and no independent buyers can confirm delivery.
Warning signs
- Prices are implausibly low and stock is always available.
- Only irreversible payments or payments without meaningful buyer protection are accepted.
- Contact details and independent purchase reviews do not check out.
How to protect yourself
- ✓ Research the seller independently, including complaints and its actual contact details.
- ✓ Use a payment method with suitable dispute or buyer protection and understand its limits.
- ✓ Avoid gift cards, cryptocurrency, and transfers to unfamiliar retail sellers.
- ✓ Save product listings, order confirmations, and correspondence.
If it happens to you
Contact your payment provider quickly about a dispute or reversal, with your records. Report the listing to the advertising or marketplace platform. If you created an account using a reused password, change it on other services; a lost purchase may also expose credentials.
Know this now
Check the seller before the bargain. Payment protections matter more than a polished storefront or countdown timer.
