Fake Parking QR Codes
Fraudulent QR stickers send drivers to fake parking-payment pages.
What it is
Fake parking QR codes are a location-specific payment scam: an attacker places a fraudulent code on a meter or parking sign and collects drivers' money or card details. The parking space and meter can be genuine while the payment destination is not. Paying the fake site may also leave your actual parking unpaid.
How it works
A sticker covers the operator's original code or adds a new 'pay here' label. The destination imitates the parking service and requests a vehicle registration, card information, and sometimes a bank approval code. Because the scammer receives the payment, the real operator may have no record that you paid.
How people get tricked
Drivers are in a hurry and expect phone-based payment. A plausible operator logo and the physical meter lend credibility. A low parking charge distracts from the larger risk of disclosing reusable card details.
Example scenario
You scan a newly added sticker and pay for two hours. The official operator's app later shows no active session for your plate because the payment went to a copied website instead.
Warning signs
- A fresh sticker covers printed instructions or another code.
- The domain does not match the operator named on official signage.
- There is no confirmed parking session in the verified app or account.
How to protect yourself
- ✓ Use the operator's already-verified app and enter the location number from signage.
- ✓ If using a website, obtain its address independently rather than trusting only the sticker.
- ✓ Check for a valid session or receipt before leaving the vehicle.
- ✓ Ask the operator about inconsistent labels or payment instructions.
If it happens to you
Contact your issuer if card details were entered, report the sticker to the parking operator, and preserve the fake receipt and address. Confirm or pay your real parking through the verified system; discuss any resulting penalty with the operator using your evidence.
Know this now
A fake parking payment can create two problems: stolen payment details and an unpaid real parking session.
