Infostealers

Malware collects credentials, session cookies, and other valuable data from a device.

What it is

Infostealers are malware designed to collect valuable information from a device, including accessible passwords, session cookies, documents, and wallet data. A session cookie can represent an already authenticated login, so theft may matter even when MFA is enabled. What can be collected depends on operating-system and application protections and the privileges obtained.

How it works

The malware often arrives through fake installers, cracked software, or deceptive verification commands. Once running, it searches accessible browser and application storage and sends collected records out. Operators may sell these bundles to others, so several accounts can be attacked after a short-lived infection.

How people get tricked

A download works well enough to look genuine. Victims assume a password change or antivirus cleanup ends the incident, overlooking sessions, recovery material, and other secrets copied at the same time.

Example scenario

After installing a fake utility, your social account is accessed without a new MFA prompt. An attacker may have replayed an existing session rather than learned how to defeat MFA itself.

Warning signs

  • A security alert identifies credential or browser-data collection.
  • Several unrelated accounts show unfamiliar sessions after one download.
  • Unexpected access occurs even though the password was not reused.

How to protect yourself

  • ✓ Avoid untrusted installers and keep endpoint protection and software current.
  • ✓ Reduce unnecessary privilege and keep wallet recovery secrets offline.
  • ✓ Use phishing-resistant sign-in, while recognizing that a compromised endpoint remains dangerous.
  • ✓ Protect sensitive accounts and monitor new-session notifications.

If it happens to you

Isolate and remediate or rebuild the device. From a clean device, revoke sessions, rotate exposed credentials and keys, and inspect recovery details. Treat wallet secrets and organizational credentials according to their own revocation processes. Changing only the browser password may leave other stolen access usable.

Know this now

An infostealer can take both the key and an already-open door. Revoke sessions as well as changing passwords.
