Malicious Browser Extensions
Browser add-ons abuse permissions to read or alter sensitive web activity.
What it is
Malicious browser extensions abuse the access granted to a browser add-on. Depending on permissions, they can read page content, change forms, monitor navigation, or interact with sensitive sessions. A useful feature does not justify unlimited access, and an extension that was once legitimate can become harmful after its publisher or update channel is compromised.
How it works
The add-on requests access to selected sites or all visited pages. It may copy data from forms, inject misleading content, or redirect a payment. Updates can introduce new behavior. The exact capabilities depend on the browser and permission model, so broad warnings should not be confused with every extension having unrestricted device access.
How people get tricked
Many reviews and a familiar feature encourage trust. Permissions such as reading and changing all website data sound abstract, but can include private account pages. Store screening reduces risk without guaranteeing every update is safe.
Example scenario
A coupon extension with access to every site inserts a fake payment form into a genuine shop. You see the correct shop domain but the extension has changed what appears inside the page.
Warning signs
- Permissions exceed what the feature reasonably needs.
- The publisher changes or the extension requests unexpected new access.
- Pages behave differently when the add-on is disabled.
How to protect yourself
- ✓ Keep only necessary add-ons and verify their publisher and purpose.
- ✓ Restrict site access where the browser supports it.
- ✓ Review permission changes rather than automatically accepting them.
- ✓ Use a minimal-extension browser profile for sensitive tasks if practical.
If it happens to you
Disable and remove the suspect extension, record its name and identifier, and check for other unwanted software. Revoke affected account sessions and rotate credentials from a trusted environment if data may have been stolen. Removing the extension does not retract information it already sent out.
Know this now
An add-on can alter a real website from inside your browser. The correct domain cannot protect you from every extension you authorize.
