Ransomware

Malware that locks your files until you pay.

What it is

Ransomware encrypts everything on your device — photos, documents, backups — then demands payment (usually crypto) to unlock them.

How it works

Often delivered through phishing email attachments or fake software. Once it runs, it scrambles your files in minutes.

How people get tricked

An employee opens an 'invoice.pdf' that's really a hidden program. Within minutes, the company's files are locked.

How to protect yourself

  • Back up important files to an external drive or cloud, regularly.
  • Disconnect backups after use so ransomware can't reach them.
  • Don't open unexpected attachments, even from people you know.
  • Keep software patched — most attacks use known, fixable bugs.

Know this now

A good backup is the only real cure. If you have one, ransomware loses its power.
