Remote Code Execution

A vulnerability lets an attacker run code on another system.

What it is

Remote code execution, or RCE, is the ability to make another system execute attacker-controlled code through a remotely reachable weakness. It is a capability rather than one particular bug. Impact depends on the process's permissions, accessible data, network reach, and isolation; execution inside a restricted service is different from immediate administrator control.

How it works

Unsafe command construction, vulnerable parsing, insecure deserialization, or a flawed dependency turns remote input into execution. A crafted request or uploaded file may reach the vulnerable path. The attacker can then perform whatever the compromised process is allowed to do, and may seek more privilege or persistence.

How people get tricked

A request or file appears to be ordinary application data. Developers may assume a parser or converter is safe because the feature only handles documents. End-user deception is not required when the vulnerable service is exposed directly.

Example scenario

A vulnerable document-conversion component runs attacker-controlled instructions while processing an upload. Its service account can read stored documents, increasing the consequences beyond that one uploaded file.

Warning signs

  • Unexpected child processes or outbound connections from an application service.
  • Endpoint alerts associated with uploads or unusual requests.
  • New files, tasks, or account changes inconsistent with normal operation.

How to protect yourself

  • ✓ Patch exposed components and remove unsafe execution and deserialization paths.
  • ✓ Run services with narrow permissions and appropriate isolation.
  • ✓ Restrict network access and keep secrets outside unnecessary process reach.
  • ✓ Monitor process behavior and test dangerous input boundaries in authorized environments.

If it happens to you

Isolate the affected service, preserve evidence, and determine what executed and what its identity could access. Patch the entry point, rebuild compromised workloads when necessary, and rotate exposed secrets. Blocking a reported input does not establish that all execution paths are secured.

Know this now

RCE impact follows the process's privileges. Least privilege cannot replace a fix, but it can sharply limit the damage.
