Romance Scams

What it is

Romance scams use a fabricated emotional relationship to obtain money, private information, or intimate material. They can unfold over weeks or months rather than one urgent message. The profile may be stolen, invented, or supported by synthetic media. Some campaigns lead into fraudulent investment platforms rather than asking directly for a personal loan.

How it works

The scammer builds frequent contact, mirrors your interests, and moves the conversation away from a platform's moderation. Meetings are repeatedly delayed. Once trust is established, an emergency, travel expense, or investment opportunity creates a financial request. Small initial payments can become larger requests when you are emotionally invested.

How people get tricked

Attention and apparent intimacy make inconsistencies easier to excuse. Shame or secrecy isolates the target from outside advice. A video call is not conclusive identity proof, and a reverse-image search finding nothing does not prove the profile is genuine.

Example scenario

An online partner repeatedly postpones meeting, then recommends a trading site. A small balance appears to grow, but withdrawing it requires additional 'tax' payments to the same operator.

Warning signs

• Repeated excuses prevent independent verification or meeting.
• Requests for money, investments, or secrecy enter the relationship.
• Payments must go through gift cards, crypto, or third parties.

If it happens to you

Stop payments, preserve conversations and transaction records, and contact your bank or payment provider promptly. Report the profile and investment site. Seek support without self-blame; these are deliberate manipulations. Avoid anyone promising guaranteed recovery in exchange for another fee.
